We were in Maine, and had opportunity to see fireworks on the 3rd and the 4th, and missed both. The fireworks in Sanford were on the 3rd and featured Starship (!). If memory serves, the math goes like this: Jefferson Airplane - some band members you never heard of + MTV = Jefferson Starship + Tribal Casinos - Grace Slick = Starship. Not sure how and why we missed that, as the thought of hearing "We built this city on Rock and Roll" in Sanford on July 3rd, the THIRD... that's good stuff.
So on Friday, we get this interesting postcard in the mail. Click on the photo so you can read it...
We strolled over after a trip into Fremont during the day. There was a bandshell, contower, 2 side stages, eating areas, theme decorations (island), a crew of about 200, 4 patrol boats, 2 big tugs, and 3 barges out in the water. Pakistani limo drivers were all huddled together in the parking lot, smoking cigarettes, having a good time. Dudes with tattoos were driving forklifts bringing in rocks, bambo, sculptural chairs, rigging, etc. Taking a guess, I would say the event had to cost at least a cool mil. Night fell and the bulk of the guests were run in with ducks. The mains had this to say on it.
Anyway, after scoping out the set that afternoon, we walked down about 9:30, waited 20 minutes, then were treated to a fantastic fireworks show. There were maybe 200 hundred other people there, so you could choose just about anyplace to lay out your blanket and spit watermelon seeds without hitting anyone. The barge was much closer to the shore than during the 4th, so it looked like we were going to get hit by them. It was kind of hallucinatory, but that just might have been a flashback.
