Are your controlling your car, or...?

On some days I have been bike commuting to work. The bike infrastructure is very poor, even though Seattle is supposed to be relatively bike friendly. When you are in your carcoon, you do not feel the frantic energy of rush hour, the wasted purpose. I think I feel it on a bike because I fear getting hit. I think many people would hit you if they thought they could get away with it.

On the way in to Magnolia I stopped on the draw-bridge to see the boats. I stopped to look at the houses for sale, and read the signs. I saw new car seats in a dumpster. I saw where people sleep down by the train tracks, in the thickets. You can drive by there hundreds of times and never know they are there. I never expected bike commuting to feel like a subversive act.

On the way home I dropped down a dead end road and followed a path through some woods to a long wooden footbridge over the tracks. It was quiet there, no trains.

A few minutes later I was crossing at the locks and took these pictures.
